Skittle Players outside an Inn
Texte de l'auteur
Jan Steen, a 17th century Dutch artist, was an innkeeper in addition to being a painter (Murray). His painting of recreating townsfolk shows a sense of intimacy with the subjects as though he knows them. The manner in which they are they are shown seems to hint that the portraits could have been for sale either to local townspeople or to travelers who had fond memories of their stay at his in. Painting would have supplemented Steen's income and presenting subjects such as this would have allowed for him to sell works with minimal effort.
