Commissioned by William McGillivray to help bolster the spirits of North West Company fur traders, this painting was conceived on a grand scale (the canvas measures seven by four feet) in order to commemorate Admiral Nelson's greatest naval victory at the Battle of Trafalgar (Hudson's Bay Company 2008). Berczy's painting 'The Battle of Trafalgar' was intended as a companion piece to this portrait (Hudson's Bay Company 2008). Berczy has portrayed Admiral Nelson with the stance of a Roman Emperor figure, and this became a template for Berczy's portrait of Joseph Brant (Lesser 1983). Again, this painting demonstrates Berczy's portrayal of Nelson with "the cool objectivity characteristic of Neoclassicism" (Lesser 1983).
