Marguerite Bourgeoys, 1620-1700, is the next individual I will consider.
Bourgeoys defied the single woman's tradition of living with her family or in a cloistered
community of nuns. Instead she lived with a community of sisters, the Congregation of Notre
Dame. The Congregation of Notre-Dame was primarily concerned with the education of
children opening many boarding and day schools(Fay, 17).

Bourgeoys was never painted during her lifetime. The first painting of her was done by
Pierre Le Ber in January of 1700 (Figure 4). This painting attempts to portray Bourgeoy's depth,
the authenticity of her prayer and the fullness of her commitment. There is a sacred quality in
these early depictions of Bourgeoys (Figure 4, Figure 6 and Figure 7) that is not always present
in the later representations (Simpson, 215).
