Conclusion

The fact that artists found these women worthy subjects of their talents reflects the significance of them in their own time. Presented as pious, gracious, ever devout and faithful to their gods, these women left an impression on the minds of many, and on the history of Quebec. At face value, the portraits look strikingly similar, as was convention for depictions of religious icons. Yet each portrait gives subtle clues to the unique characteristics of the individuals portrayed. These portraits grant us the ability to look back at the lives of women who marked the beginnings of New France.
