Keys to History

This monument in memory of John Young was erected in front of the port in 1908, on the initiative of the John Young Memorial Committee. A prominent Montreal businessman, Young devoted considerable time and energy to increasing the prosperity of the city's port , while managing his many commercial interests. His efforts were so important that after his death in 1878, he was considered to be the "father" of the modern port. The allegorical figure with a fountain urn, at the foot of the monument, symbolizes the River. The sculptor? Louis-Philippe Hébert.
