This view of Montreal is executed from St. Helen's Island. In this example of is mature technique, Heriot has used a light brushstroke to capture the summer hues of the island and city. The city is shown in correct relationship to the mountain in the background. The demolition of the walls of the city began in 1801 and continued until 1817. In this work they are still intact, which implies that it was executed at an early date within the range for the entire George Heriot's England and Canada Sketchbook, made up of 116 sketches dated from 1797 to 1816, the year of Heriot's departure from North America.
