Canadian painting of the 19th century was highly romantic in nature. Subjects that emphasized nature and its power were particularly appreciated. This watercolour, by British army officer J. Crawford Young, is a good example. It reveals the customs and dress of an Aboriginal family of the era. Note that the mother carries her baby in a cradleboard on her back. The cradleboard has a visor to protect the baby's face from mosquitoes.
