Keys to History:

This print, based on a photograph by William Notman, shows the central tube of the Victoria Bridge under construction. In the foreground, scaffolding surrounds the bridge piers. Behind these we can make out Chaffey derricks, named after their inventor, the Canadian Benjamin Chaffey. These were complicated machines used to hoist and position enormous quarried stones weighing up to 11 tons, for the masons in charge of pier construction.
