Description:

This wood block from 1869 was used to print the front page of a Montreal-based political satire publication called Grinchuckle, which John Henry Walker (1831-1899) engraved for William Workman, Mayor of Montreal.

Walker immigrated to Canada in 1842 along with his family from Antrim County, in what is now Northern Ireland. In 1845, his mother apprenticed him to the engraver Cyrus A. Swett, with whom he worked until 1848. He learned to be both a copper and wood engraver. Walker worked in Montreal as a commercial engraver until the 1880s and produced thousands of images.
