Miss Baxter, photographed in the William Notman studio, is wearing a dress some of whose characteristics are comparable to those of a dress in the McCord Museum
(M968.4.1.1-2). Although smaller, the bustle (the padding worn under the skirt at the lower back) is akin to that of the Museum dress. The close-fitting bodice with tight sleeves could also be said to resemble the corresponding features of the McCord dress.

The Notman Archives contain an impressive number of photographs that enable us to study the outfits worn by Montrealers between 1861 and 1900. This collection is also an extremely important resource for the study of numerous aspects of Western clothing then in fashion.
