Like many politicians, Hector-Louis Langevin started his career in law and journalism. While still a student he became editor of the Mélanges Religieux, the official publication of the diocese of Montreal. Later he made his debut in municipal politics in Quebec City. His ambition carried him on to the national stage, and he participated in creating the Canadian Confederation. In 1869, when he was in charge of the department of Public Works, he was implicated in the Pacific railroad scandal and had to resign, with the rest of the Conservative government, in 1873.
