In this photograph, Sir John William Dawson (1820-1899), then Principal of McGill College, poses for posterity in his ceremonial gown. In 1855, he left Nova Scotia to take up this position in Montreal.

Dawson, a renowned geologist and paleontologist, helped to make McGill University into a prestigious institution, particularly in the fields of geology, biology, physics and engineering. It was during his mandate, which ended in 1892, that women first gained access to higher learning at McGill University.
