Immigration at the Start of the 20th Century

This selection of approximately 100 images provides a sample of the collections related to immigration at the start of the 20th century. It recalls the largest wave of immigration in Canadian history that followed the introduction of a policy in 1896 to promote western settlement.

Profile:

  • Images of rural life and immigrant homes;
  • Images of urban life, neighbourhoods and buildings;
  • Immigrant workplaces (farms, mines, forests, factories, etc.) and various artifacts;
  • Cartoons recalling Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919), Prime Minister of Canada, and Clifford Sifton (1861-1929), Minister of the Interior from 1896 to 1905 and architect of the government's immigration policy.
