Colonization of the Prairies

This selection of approximately 90 images provides a sample of the collections related to the colonization of the Prairies during the second half of the 19th century and start of the 20th century. It documents the management of Prairie lands and birth of the provinces of Manitoba (1870), Saskatchewan (1905) and Alberta (1905).

Profile:

  • First Nations, Metis, settlers, prominent figures;
  • The National Policy and building of the transcontinental railway;
  • Grain farming, cattle ranching and mining;
  • Historical events: Métis rebellions of 1869 and 1885 as well as the negotiation of numbered treaties.
