The Settlement of Canada: An Overview

This selection of approximately 210 images provides a sample of the collections related to population growth across Canada between the years 1840 and 1945. In particular, it recalls the ancestral presence of the First Nations, the Francophone and Anglophone communities, as well as the diversity of the immigrant populations that came to colonize the Canadian West.

  • Representatives of the First Nations as well as French-Canadian, English, Scottish, Irish, Métis, Chinese, Jewish, Russian and Italian communities, among others;
  • Places of worship, neighbourhoods, buildings, homes, etc.;
  • Scenes of everyday life and rituals;
