Bengough, John Wilson

Artist John Wilson Bengough (1851-1923) edited and published the Grip in Toronto from 1873 to 1892. Bengough's cartoons about 19th century politics were prominently featured in the Grip alongside puns, jokes and satire.

In 1892, he left Grip and began publishing his caricatures in several daily newspapers in Canada, including the Montreal Star, The Globe, The Canadian Courier and The Moon. A first-rate public speaker, he toured throughout Canada delivering lectures known as "chalk talks."
