Introduction

Romantic and idyllic, just a short canoe trip from the Lachine shore, Ile Dorval was central to Frances Anne Hopkins' Canadian experience.
For two short years, from her arrival in fall of 1858 to the death of Sir George Simpson in fall of 1860, trips to the island and to Simpson's lovely country home there were among her greatest pleasures. Her Lachine Sketchbook (at ROM in Ottawa) proves the point.
