The great war was something they had never seen before. However, Canadians signed up in great numbers. Numbers that totaled to around 10,000 volunteers in the first month. There are 4 reasons why so many men joined the war. The most important reason was because of war propaganda posters that showed happy men who have already enlisted in the war. Nationalism was very important in the 19th century as everyone stood tall and proud with their country and anyone who didn't would be called out and considered a traitor. Also many signed up to aid Canada as a doctor or nurse to help their wounded comrades in the battlefield. Some where even influenced by their local church to enlist as a Canadian soldier.
