Pastimes of Yesteryear, 1867-1896

Michèle Dagenais, Université de Montréal

Between the 1870s and 1900, opportunities for amusement and access to leisure-time activities continue to expand. Having fun is no longer just for the rich. City dwellers now have many new pastimes open to them, thanks to rapid technical and industrial progress. The people of Canada enter a new era, marked by the greater availability of pastimes. But time and money are needed to enjoy them. Most people still work long days and have only a few free hours each week.
