Brand New and Wonderful: The Rise of Technology
Jacques G. Ruelland, Université de Montréal, 2003
Have you ever thought about the role that technology plays in your daily life? During the last third of the 19th century, there were so many technological innovations of such great impact that they dramatically changed the way Canadians live. More than that: they changed the perception human beings have of themselves and the world around them.
After 1867 - during the early years of Confederation in Canada - scientists discovered how to harness new sources of energy. The technologies developed using those energy sources led to advances in manufacturing, agriculture, food production, health, transportation and communication and the organization of work. The comforts of daily life increased, but the costs, in terms of social and economic relationships, were high. To this day, no period of history has seen such rapid progress, nor reshaped Canadian society so completely.
Examine with us the fascinating world of modern technology and how it affects daily life.
