For girls from prosperous and respectable Maritime families, growing up in the late 19th century meant learning to accept the limitations imposed on women in their society. By the end of the century, opportunities began to open up for them in education, careers and even sports. Nonetheless, those activities remained secondary to the "real" work of getting married and having children.
