Keys to History
Golf was played in Montreal from the late-eighteenth century onwards, but no formal club was organized until 1873. This relatively late date still makes the Montreal Golf Club the oldest in North America. The founder and first president, Alexander Denniston, had learned the game on the links of St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf in Scotland. The photograph shows members of the club playing on Fletcher's Field (now Jeanne-Mance Park) on the slope of Mount Royal.
