Keys to History

From 1897 to 1898, the Victoria Bridge underwent repairs necessitated by the frequency of train traffic and trains' steadily increasing weight. The bridge's distinctive tubular structure was replaced by a roofless structure. In addition, a new rail line was laid, along with a lane for equestrian and pedestrian traffic.

A commemorative plaque set at the entrance to the bridge and bearing the inscription A.D. MDCCCXCVII Victoria Jubilee Bridge served as a reminder that the bridge was rebaptized in honour of the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Victoria.
