Keys to History

The port of Montreal was also a market area. In 1904, the year this photo was taken, Jacques-Cartier Square and Bonsecours Market were still the biggest markets in the city. Business was so intense and the vendors so numerous, that the market sometimes spilled over onto the sidewalks and roadway of Commissioners Street, which ran along the wharfs.
