Keys to History

This photograph was taken in 1899, shortly after repair work on the Victoria Bridge had been completed. Begun in October 1897, it extended until December 13, 1898. The official opening ceremony only took place on October 16,1901, in the presence of the future King George V and Queen Mary.

John Hobson, engineer-in-chief with the Grand Trunk Railway Company, was put in charge of the repairs. A new roofless structure replaced the former tubular framework. Before the permanent structure was put in place, however, the steel employed in the construction of the tubes was used to make a temporary span. The original piers, erected between 1854 and 1860, were kept.
