Keys to History

Easily accessible by the river, then by rail, the pilgrimage to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré was hugely popular at the end of the 19th century. A big church and several other buildings were then built (the present-day basilica was built later, after a fire). This image shows the Way of the Cross about 1895. This site was dedicated to Saint Anne and, like Bon-Secours Chapel, it dates back to the 17th century. Amerindians visited both this site and Mount Calvary in Oka.
