Keys to History

The monument to the founders of Montreal, photographed shortly after it was erected in 1893. The obelisk was unveiled on May 17, 1894, on the anniversary of the arrival on the island of the founders of Montreal. It was commissioned by the Société historique de Montreal, a society founded in 1858 by the first mayor of the city and a great collector, Jacques Viger. Very active at the beginning of the 20th century, the society issued many publications, put up plaques, organized commemorative events, etc.
