Keys to History

Methodism, another Protestant denomination that originated in England, is based on a different conception of religion. There are various tendencies within this denomination, but in general, personal reading of the Bible, simply assisted by the pastor, has a much greater place than among Catholics or Anglicans. Here we see the great St. James Methodist Church, on St. Catherine Street, which had just been built when this photograph was taken - in the early 1890s. This church was also a kind of mother church for Methodist Montrealers.
