Art Deco, or Art moderne, furniture became available in Montreal in 1926. Stores like Eaton's in Montreal carried locally produced items that were slightly more conservative in design than those being made in France.

Furniture in the modern interior was often pushed closer to the wall, which allowed for freer movement. As can be seen in this photograph, the general décor included a functional layout and a minimum of ornament. Softly diffused electric light illuminated the interior with a milky white glow. This created an illusion of space that was reinforced by high ceilings and a strong vertical emphasis in curtains, furniture and architectural details.
