Keys to History

Place d'Armes about 1890. The New York Life Insurance Company occupied one floor of its building and leased the others. On the right, the Jacques Cartier Bank, built in 1873, stands beside an office building from 1867, typical of the commercial buildings of the period. To the left is a building which first housed a bank, then the first headquarters of Canadian Pacific, before it was enlarged by an insurance company. The Place d'Armes was the meeting place of pan-Canadian financial institutions, such as the Bank of Montreal, and the smaller financial networks of French Canada.
