Keys to History

In 1906, the Grand Trunk Railway Company opened these big grain elevators for the export of cereal crops from the West. Shortly after, the Port of Montreal built its own silos - which were gigantic. These silos, dating from 1900 and 1910 and equipped with conveyor belts and other stationary and mobile equipment, looked like a great machine blocking off the city from the river. Montreal became one of the great ports of the world.
