Keys to History
In 1867 members of the Montreal Gymnastic Club erected a stone building on the corner of Mansfield and Burnside (now de Maisonneuve) Streets. Fourteen years later a new sports club was incorporated under the name of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, an amalgamation of the Montreal Lacrosse, Snow Shoe and Bicycle Clubs with headquarters in the gymnastic building. To these three founding clubs were soon added the Montreal Football Club and the Montreal Toboggan Club, and later the clubs devoted to fencing, boxing, hockey, baseball, chess and drama. Members of the M.A.A.A. were very active in theatrical and musical productions put on for public entertainment. The stage can be seen in the background of the photograph.
