Keys to History

This railway bridge at Saint Mary's, Ontario is one of the numerous bridges which the Grand Trunk Railway erected during the 1850s in order to complete its rail line. This is a beam bridge, one of the bridge types most favoured by railway companies in the mid-19th century. The span of this type of bridge, which rests on piers, is made up of a solid beam over which the trains run.
