Keys to History

The bridge shown in this photograph, which spans the Aramosa River, was built by the Grand Trunk Railway Company at Rockwood, Ontario. It belongs to the family of beam bridges. Most of the railway bridges built in Canada after the mid-19th century were of this type, which consisted of beams of various lengths and thicknesses resting on piers. With this type of bridge, it is the beams that form the span.
