Keys to History

In this photograph, several men surrounded by cranes, machines and scaffolding are working on coffer dam no. 8, which would be used to build one of the piers of the Victoria Bridge.

In 1858 and 1859, the final two years of the bridge's construction, crews worked particularly hard in order to finish the bridge on time. In 1858, the photographer William Notman was commissioned by the engineer James Hodges (1814-1879) to photograph the construction site. His first photograph of it dates from March 1858.
