This photograph was taken on April 18, 1859 by William Notman, the official photographer of the construction of the Victoria Bridge. Notman recorded the progress on the bridge made between 1858 and 1860.
Since construction work was seasonal, most bridge workers were laid off in the winter and not rehired until late April or May. In all but one winter there was some activity: cutting stones, providing timber, taking soundings and sinking mooring cribs through the ice. The winter of 1858-1859 was the exception. In order to meet the deadline for completing the bridge, the men were kept fully employed, building cribs and scaffolding and erecting the center tube.
