Keys to History
In 1858-1859, the engineers and labourers building the Victoria Bridge worked through the winter for the first time. In previous years, the cold, ice and snow had forced work to a halt. But this time the entrepreneurs wanted to speed up construction in order to meet their deadlines. Thus the workers had to deal with the rigours of winter when putting the central tube in place.
The following winter, when William Notman took this photograph, the bridge was finally finished. On December 17, 1859, the first official train made the crossing.
