Description

This 1858 photograph shows a dress with pagoda sleeves that resemble those of the McCord Museum's dress M973.1.1.1-2. Sleeves of this sort expanded around the mid-1850s, as did the circumference of skirts.
Since the beginning of photography in the 1840s, photographic portraits provide a true, living image of fashion by capturing a moment in time on film.
