Keys to History

Mount Calvary in Oka, photographed here about 1900, was both a picturesque, rural setting and a place of worship. The seven chapels of the old Way of the Cross date back to New France, A traditional place of pilgrimage for the Mohawks in the region, this site became very popular during the 1870s and 1880s and attracted thousands of Montrealers, who made the journey across the Island of Montreal and the Lake of Two Mountains by train and by steamboat.
