Keys to History

The gate (1888) of the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, topped with angels heralding the resurrection and the Last Judgment. Laid out in 1855, this cemetery resembled its Protestant neighbour, with its groves of trees and winding roads, but it also provided linear perspectives in the Classical and Baroque tradition. Visitors who passed through the gate were directed towards a building on which all the inscriptions referred to the resurrection. The concern here was peaceful individual rest, in the collective expectation of a new life.
