Keys to History

Located at the foot of the working-class Ste Marie neighbourhood, Sohmer Park was opened in 1889. It was a place where Montrealers went to relax and listen to outdoor concerts in an atmosphere reminiscent of French "cafés-concerts". There was a charge to enter the park. This photo shows the promenade, with its view of the river and, beyond, the harbour wharves. The park was very popular. However, as the number of on-site facilities grew, its green spaces and pastoral charm gradually disappeared. It was closed in 1919.
