Keys to History
In this photograph, six men are pulling a canoe over the mountains of ice that have accumulated in front of Montreal, in the direction of Île Sainte-Hélène.
The ice jams occurred in the spring, with the volume and speed of the river increasing as the ice melted. The currents were so strong that they carried off huge quantities of ice that then piled up where the watercourse narrowed.
