Keys to History
During the 19th century, ice piled up each spring on the Saint Lawrence River directly in front of Montreal.
In this photograph, four men appear to be braving the ice in an attempt to cross the river in a canoe. The ice jams caused considerable problems, particularly in that they led to the flooding of the city streets. But they also heralded milder days ahead, since they marked the end of the long winter. Soon river transportation would resume its normal course on the waters of the Saint Lawrence.
