The Parti Québécois victory in the September 1994 general election marked the crowning achievement of a long political career for Jacques Parizeau, who had been active in the sovereignty movement for over 25 years.
One of the key figures in the independence movement, Parizeau became the leader of the Parti Québécois in 1988 and premier of Québec in 1994. It was during his term in office that the second referendum on sovereignty was held in 1995.
Parizeau represented the Lanaudière riding of L'Assomption in the Québec National Assembly.
Parizeau was sworn in as premier of Québec on September 26, 1994.
Jacques Parizeau sat in the National Assembly from 1976 to 1984 and, as Parti Québécois leader, from 1989 to 1996. He was premier of Québec from 1994 to 1996.
