The linear, practical form and minimal ornamentation of this chair is typical of furniture design in the Art Deco period. The 20s' interior marked a shift away from crowded Victorian living spaces, becoming both smaller and simpler due to the growing influx of people into cities and the looming Depression. The smaller living room became the centre of the home, a space for families and friends to gather at the end of the day.

Following the trends set by the 1925 Paris World's Fair, Canadian magazines and department stores encouraged consumers to adopt the modern style, bringing it into the mainstream. Many embraced the new style by introducing Art Deco objects, such as this chair, into their existing interiors.
