Keys to History

In the October 6, 1860 issue of the daily Illustrated London News, the driving-in of the last rivet in the Victoria Bridge is described as follows:

"The last iron rivets were fixed, and the last of all, a silver one was inserted. The Prince took the hammer. Mr. Hodges adjusted the silver knob; and with some stout sounding blows, the Prince finished the last rivet in the Victoria Bridge. There was no cheering over it - the company was too select for that; and the wood smoke from the engine had long ceased to be a pictorial accessory, and had become a stifling nuisance."
