This trowel was presented to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, Charles Fitzpatrick (1853-1940), on September 2, 1913, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the monument to Sir Georges-Étienne Cartier, located on the lower slopes of Mt. Royal. Of great rarity, the object attests to a tradition that has since disappeared: it is one of only four ever made by a Canadian jeweller to commemorate the placing of a foundation stone for a public building.
