This fashion plate taken from The Canadian Illustrated News, a daily paper, shows the latest styles for the summer of 1871. The outfits shown are worn by two people, one facing forward and the other away-an arrangement that makes it possible to see the front and the back of each garment.
The two women in the far right of the print are wearing an outfit that is in some respects similar to a dress in the McCord Museum (M9184.108.40.206-2). It is trimmed with a bustle and a high-waisted bodice with small basques (extensions of the bodice that fall below the waist). In each case, the basque is longer in the back than in front, and is decorated with buttons.
