Description

This primitive painting depicts the first herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle to arrive in Quebec, or, more specifically, the Eastern Townships. It was owned by John Henry Pope (1824-1889), the member of Parliament who was twice appointed minister of agriculture. Seen in the background of the painting are Pope's home and some farm buildings. The work was painted by Frederick Charles Gordon, a Canadian artist best known for his portraits and still lifes.
