This sculpture of a male figure is the work of André Bourgault (1898-1951). Bourgault, who lived in St-Jean-Port-Joli, was a prolific sculptor who explored both religious and secular themes. Working with his brother, Bourgault created some of the most noteworthy popular sculptures to come out of Quebec. The glorification of Québécois farmers was a popular subject among artists; before Bourgault, other artists had explored it, among them Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Côté and Alfred Laliberté.
